KAYA MO NA ‘TOL!

December 18th, 2006 by cfasc

Kaya Mo Na Tol!!

Last 2004 Elections, 30% of the voters came from the youth sector. Surely, the youth can be a decisive sector in the upcoming elections.

It is only during elections where we can directly participate in governance because this is the only opportunity where we can install leaders who will truly ADVANCE OUR RIGHTS, WELFARE, AND ASPIRATIONS.

In line with this, we are confident that the Kabataan Party will truly serve the ideals of us youth. It is the first and only Youth Party to ensure our rights to education, labor and of the citizens.

If elected, this will be the first time the youth sector would have a voice in the government. The youth will have the power and influence to decide on national issues. And ultimately, we will be able to protect and implement our rights.

Indeed, it’s high time our voices be heard!

Vote for your future!

Vote Kabataan Party!

**Deadline of Voter’s Registration is on
December 31, 2006.

The Lantern Parade ‘06 CFASC Statement

December 17th, 2006 by cfasc

The Lantern Parade: A Display of Unity Amidst Adversity

Friday, December 15, 2006 was a momentous day for the UP Community, specially the College of Fine Arts. It was the day for the traditional Annual UP Lantern Parade, wherein the FA students usually take the lead. But lo and behold, the whole UP Community, the media, and perennial viewers were shocked and stunned by the last minute announcement by the UP Administration/Pres. Emerlinda Roman canceling the Lantern Parade. Reason given: security threat in the campus.

Coincidentally, the day was the scheduled meeting of the Board of Regents, the highest policy-making body of the University. And top of the agenda was the controversial proposed 300-percent tuition and other fee increases that would affect over 25,000 UP students nationwide, and within the next four to ten years, roughly 1 Million Young Filipinos’ access to quality college education.

The thunder of the Cancel Order initially caused disappointment and despair to us all Fine Arts people: students, faculty and staff, as with other Diliman units. But we saw no lightning. We surmised that the Arts and the over 50-year UP Tradition were being threatened by the insecurity of some Quezon Hall power wielders. And Quezon Hall is not the UP community. The Arts and the Lantern Parade must be dedicated to the people, not dictated by some persons.

Thus our creative characters conquered their insincerity. The Lantern Parade must be defended, against lies or paranoia. We took our floats and feelings to the streets, literally.

We wished to grant FA Administrator’s request to abide by the arbitrary dictates by having a ‘merry go round’ within the College grounds. But we stood our ground. Defend the Arts; defend our freedoms against the whims and whimper of a few.

The invented threat turned the whole FA into unimagined unity. We wanted justice for all of us who toiled through night and day for the past several weeks to give our share of Christmas Joy to the UP Community Nating Mahal. And united, we have shown that Arts (and Christmas) must not be sacrificed for some Machiavellian shortcuts.

With our initiative and the corollary courage of our fellow students and faculty in other Colleges, the Lantern Parade has lived. Though a few floats did not make it (thanks to the confusion caused by the wizards at Quezon Hall), the astounding majority of FA students who joined clearly illustrates the students’ will to defy unreasonable and absurd excuses of rattled authorities (a bomb threat which turned out to be a hoax, as not even a single firecracker turned up in the bushes of Diliman. Oh, George Bush, your style blooms).

The success of the Lantern Parade displayed not only the power of a united and vigilant studentry. More importantly, we obtained victory of the Arts and Reason over autocratic and authoritarian dictates!

Students of Fine Arts, and Diliman, Take a Bow!
Defend the Arts! Defend our Freedoms!
Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Liberty!

                                     Para Sa Masa

                                   by Eraserheads

ito ay para sa mga masa

sa lahat ng nawalan ng pag-asa

sa lahat ng ng aming nakasama

sa lahat  ng hirap at pagdurusa

naaalala niyo pa ba

binigyan namin kayo ng ligaya

ilang taon na rin ang  lumipas

mga kulay ng mundo ay kumupas

marami na rin ang mga pagbabago

di maiiwasan pagkat tayo ay tao lamang

mapapatawad mo ba ako

kung hindi ko sinunod ang gusto mo

la la la la la la la la. . . . . .

pinilit kong iahon ka

ngunit ayaw mo namang sumama

huwag mong hayaang ganito

bigyan ang sarili ng respeto

CALL TO THE FILIPINO ARTIST

October 10th, 2006 by cfasc

CALL TO THE FILIPINO ARTIST

“The Filmmaker, like his fellow artists in different media, has now realized that the artist is also a public person. He does not work in isolation from society. Instead of working alone in his ivory tower the artist is a citizen of slums, of the streets, of the battlefield if need be. The artist is always a participant. He tries to be true not only to his craft but also to himself. For it is the supreme duty of the artist to investigate the truth, no matter what forces attempt to hide it. And then to report it to the people, to confront them with, it like a whiplash that will cause wounds but will free the mind from the various fantasies and escapist fare that the establishment pollutes our minds with.

To the best of our abilities, and if we oftentimes fail, we want to do works that will hurt, films that will disturb, films that will not make you rest. For the times are really bad, and given times like these it is a crime to rest. We can not rest, and we should not, while there’s a fellow Filipino starving in

Negros

, an Aquino or Galman crying for justice, a salvage victim lying in a mountain of garbage while a corrupt family rules the country with uncontrolled power and wealth. While it is the duty of the artist to work for what is true, good, and beautiful, first we have to expose and fight what is wrong.

In these times when most of the media hide the truth from us, when most of what we get from the media are silly gossip and petty flesh and sensationalized crimes, we go to the streets to find out what’s happening. We listen to those artists who dare risk their lives and livelihoods. Who reiterate once more the utmost duty of the artist — that the artist is a committed person, that he will always the side of any human being who is violated, abused, oppressed, dehumanized whatever his instrument — the pen, the brush, the camera.”

isang tula para sa mga artist

Ahon

Panigurado, may kanya-kanyang kwento

sina Totong, Aron, Teng, Jon, Mangkols at iba pang kasama

Ang nangyari’y tila inukit sa tubig;

kapag may nasira, may nabubuo;
